Second Life, Skype, and Goodbye

The resources links were very useful for Second Life; I now understand why a university, for instance, would want to be part of this. I didn't realise also it was at such a big scale. But I still need to get my head around this better, and I am not convinced about joining.

Skype on the other hand is in - and it has saved me some money; I've been using it for video calls, and had recently a couple of people at the other end. They were commenting how they can hear me in the whole room as if I was next door.

And so much for that.

Thank you Kerri for setting this up; the resources have been interesting and useful. And thank you to everyone who's been reading this. Now that I can shut the curtains on this, I'll have another stroll through other people's blogs; it's been fun getting to know some of your other 'selves'.

Facebook

I use facebook (on and off). Its greatest benefit for me is in being another way of keeping in touch with people overseas, and being less intrusive. I have joined also some groups, causes...within limits, and it's, again, another way of keeping posted on things of interest. Stating the obvious here.

But I haven't heard of Ning, for example. Just had a quick look.

MySpace

I don’t use my account that much; in fact, I hardly look at MySpace. I found out also their copyright filter is going strong. A video I was trying to upload got blocked. And, NO, whatever you’re thinking, it’s not it. It was because of Bob Marley, the background music I chose for the video. Found YouTube a bit more flexible in this respect.

RSS-ing

Created a blogline account, and added 24 feeds. Now I just have to remember going to that place to check what I subscribed to. I find there are so many ways you can get what you want - speaking strictly about things online (yet to figure out otherwise) - that it can get confusing. What works the best for me - with my studies for instance - is to subscribe to email updates to sites I know otherwise I would have to scroll through....

Charts of all kinds

I fiddled around with bubble.us and it was fun and had way too many branches. Will use it again with a concrete plan for sure.

Google Documents and Books

I've been using Google documents for a while; must have something to do with loosing my emails and everything in MyDocuments. Twice. But, it's great: the easy access, not having to save everything on a USB....

As for the Google Books, I am new to it. On having a quick scan, I guess it's useful having all the links to reviews, other publications by the author in one spot.

Google Mapping

Searching an address on this has become second nature, so, yes, definetly very useful. I have also found out that some very clever people can put the the Google map to much sophisticated use such as this example. Using google maps to 'flag' farmer markets in Victoria, with the pink flags linking to video interviews with people from markets. Or, a more humanitarian use, the website mashup developed in Kenya after post-election violence there in 2008 - Ushahidi- that used citizen-generated reports and Google maps to create crisis information and map violent places to be avoided.

Facebook-on etiquette

I'm doing a bit of a detour here, and stop at Facebook for a second. I remember a conversation we had, a few of us, of Vicnet, about what to post or not to post on facebook...so, some lessons in facebook etiquette, in old and gold style fashion...">

Audio/E-Books

Took an inspection of the e-book sites. Interesting. I can see when these would come in useful - learning another language etc (impressed to find text from 'In search of lost time' for example).

Podcasting

I got two favorites - pretty much the same theme with variations - Radio Australia's Pacific Beat and 24h dans le Pacifique.

I listen to these more or less every day on the way to, back from work...Don't ask why....

Didn't get far with the exercise of finding an interesting podcast related to the library world. Although something interesting I did find. It's just not podcasting. Would sound recording count, too? Then have a look, listen to the World Digital Library site.

Freshly out last week.

Tubing

Just looked back to my previous post and I can tell I'm loosing track here. It's very easy, isn't it?!....So, back to our modules! A favorite YouTube video. Well, here it goes: The Chooky Dancers, a group of Aboriginal teenagers from Arnhem Land. Why this video? Well, I did say I love Zorba the Greek, and these kids got famous for their interpretation of that dance, and better said they got famous because of, yes, YouTube. But first of all, have a look at the Chookies. I saw them last week at Melbourne Museum and they were AMAZING and very funny too.

That Library Thing

No photos of my books as I have none (photos, I mean) but added some titles in my account that would be appropriate to mark yesterday's international day of remembrance of the transatlantic slavery trade. You can scroll my catalogue here.

Imagining

It took a lot of walking, flying, working out routes, quarreling over who is taking the lead, getting lost...but they made it. My birds made it to the USA. For good or ill...Haven't heard yet which. Although rumours have it that they've been framed.

Flickering, BubbleSharing....

Needless to say, it never occurred to me that following up on this would have such weird and ominous consequences...The combined effects of still daydreaming about Vanuatu and looking through Vanuatu photos - what else? - on Flicker have complicated my life most severly.... I have spent the past hour sorting and pondering on photos. 'Flicker' Vanuatu and you'll get 33,000 results. But, after all, a place it's nothing without its people.... Right? Right.... So, I created a Ni-Vanuatus (locals of Vanuatu) album; some are my photos, most are not. But this is all about sharing, isn't it? I used BubbleSharing - thanks for the tip Colleen! - and if you're interested, here 'tis!

As it happens, first it was the word.....Yeah.Yeah.Right.Right....But which one?...the same with naming this blog.....What to choose? 'As it happens' seems about right since you're documenting things you learn, things that happen while you learn.....So, as it happens it is! why not?...why not indeed.

And if you happen to be a wordnerd too, I have a list of 'neologisms' published by Washington Post. Apparently they ask their readers to supply alternate meanings for common words. For example: abdicate (v.), to give up all hope of ever having a flat stomach....Yes, I thought you would like this one...anyhow, you got the gist.
